Alameda County Community Food Bank has been at the forefront of hunger relief efforts in the Bay Area since 1985. The Food Bank serves a community in which 1 in 4 residents experiences some level of food insecurity. Our core work includes distributing food through a network of approximately 400 food pantries, meal programs, and other community organizations, as well as direct distribution programs including school-based and home delivery programs. This year, the Food Bank will distribute the equivalent of one million meals a week, 45% of which is farm-fresh produce.
ACCFB’s hunger-relief efforts also include California’s largest CalFresh (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) outreach department, anti-hunger advocacy, food as medicine initiatives, and food recovery and sustainability efforts.
Calls to our Emergency Helpline have risen, signaling that the need in the community remains high despite funding being down. As we approach 2025, the midpoint of a difficult decade, ACCFB leadership is working to center the concept of “food justice” in our work. We are developing innovative strategies to leverage public and private funding that could lead to bold solutions to the root causes of hunger.
Food access will continue to be at the heart of our work. And yet, as we look ahead to marking 40 years as a community food bank in 2025, we believe it is also our role to imagine new solutions and new systems that forge a path to food justice in our community.
What We Do
Alameda County Community Food Bank has been in business since 1985 with a vision toward a day when we can go out of business. We are the hub of a vast collection and distribution network that provides food for 400 nonprofit agencies in Alameda County.
In 2024 ACCB distributed more than 58 million pounds of food, which is enough food for 49 million meals. This includes 27 million pounds of fresh produce -- nearly half of our total food distribution.
Our systematic approach to alleviating hunger includes:
◾ One of California’s busiest – and most efficient – emergency food helplines
◾ A multilingual CalFresh outreach program which serves as the blueprint for programs across the nation
◾ Dynamic hunger and nutrition education programs
◾ A model food recovery program that rescues more than 10 million pounds a year of fresh food (enough for over 8.5 million meals) that otherwise would have gone to the landfill
◾ An innovative advocacy program that supports public policies that benefit low-income neighbors and promote systemic changes needed to fight poverty and hunger
◾ A pioneering food program for Medi-Cal patients with diet-related diseases and chronic conditions that benefit from fresh, organic produce and other tailored groceries – first of its kind in CA
Alameda County Community Food Bank is an accredited charity by the Better Business Bureau; and for 17 consecutive years has received Charity Navigator’s top rating — Four Stars — ranking the organization among the top 1 percent of charities nationwide.
