EPFH is the youngest food bank in America and a member of Feeding America.
In partnership with non-profit human service agencies, such as shelters, soup kitchens and food pantries, EPFH is playing a life-saving role in providing nutritious food to families struggling to meet basic needs and seniors living on fixed incomes. EPFH distributes food across El Paso, Hudspeth and Culberson Counties through 132 partner agencies (brick and mortar food pantries) and 144 client choice mobile pantries. Distribution increased from 8.7 million pounds of food in 2015 to 32.5 million pounds in 2019. This represents an unprecedented 100% growth rate over the prior year.
EPFH provides food to 13,000 students across 14 school pantries that benefit El Paso school children in Pre-K through high school. These pantries are vital in providing children with food when they are most vulnerable outside of school hours.
EPFH uses refrigerated trucks to distribute food to a minimum of 100 families per site who live in underserved/unserved neighborhoods. Unlike most hunger relief programs where individuals are handed a pre-packed box of food, client choice allows individuals the opportunity to shop for food. EPFH converted 100% of its mobile food pantries to the client choice model in 2018.
EPFH proudly obtained the TDAs highly competitive contract to manage the National School Lunch Program in 2018. EPFH serves 185,000 low-income children across 182 schools in 7 West Texas counties. With the volume of food reaching schools in West Texas dropping an unprecedented 50% over the past two years, and child food insecurity on the rise, this partnership between EPHF and the TDA could not be more urgent.
In October 2018, EPFH started providing healthy food to 3,000 extremely low income senior citizens in our community on a monthly basis. The seniors selected for this program are the poorest of the poor and have an average income of $600 a month. Too often, these vulnerable seniors have to make difficult decisions between paying for rent, utilities, medicines and food.
